Underbidders' Delight: Sotheby’s Hong Kong Sales

It takes two bidders to make a good price, but only one buyer gets the work. LiveArt’s inventory consists of auction-quality artworks with the convenience and discretion of a private sale. Let’s take a look at some Hong Kong favorites.

At Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Evening sale in Hong Kong, a 2018 painting by collector favorite Rafa Macarrón achieved a strong result. The large mixed-media work was offered with a $191,282 estimate and sold for $513,922. For context, the record price for a work by Macarrón at auction is $551,641, which was also achieved at Sotheby’s in Hong Kong during the fall of 2021. LiveArt is offering a 2010 painting depicting Macarrón’s fantasy world for $300,000.

Javier Calleja’s wide-eyed figures performed nicely in both the Hong Kong Evening sale and the Hong Kong day sale, indicating his continued secondary market momentum. On the evening of the 27th, a 2018 Calleja was offered with a $76,513 estimate. It sold for eleven times that number for $851,184. At the day sale the following day, another 2018 Calleja sold for $160,580, six times its estimate. LiveArt has a 2018 Calleja work on paper featuring the same signature eyes and blue sloganed shirt available for immediate private sale.

Susumu Kamijo’s poodles also made an appearance at the day sale. A 2019 work on paper sold for $96,348 over a $25,504 estimate. LiveArt has two Kamijos listed for sale, a 2019 work on paper and a 2021 painting

It wouldn’t be a day sale in 2022 without a work or two by Jordy Kerwick. A 2022 painting by the phenom (is the paint dry yet?) sold for $240,871 over a $51,009 estimate. It is his second highest price ever achieved at auction. Additionally, a smaller 2019 canvas sold for $141,311. Want to get in on the Kerwick action? LiveArt is offering a 2021 Kerwick work on paper for $36,000.
