About the artist

Marlene Dumas

Marlene Dumas (born 1953) is a contemporary South African artist regarded by many as one of the most influential painters working today. Growing up in Apartheid South Africa greatly informs the work she continues to create, exploring themes of political oppression, sexuality, feminism, and identity in her portraiture of friends, models, and poltical figures. Some of the notable figures she has depicted include Michelle Obama, Naomi Campbell, and Princess Diana, among others. Dumas’ work pays homage to the human form through gestural brush strokes and thin coats of paint that give an iridescent and transparent quality to her paintings. She has been the subject of several major solo exhibitions, including representing the Netherlands in the 1995 Venice Biennale. Dumas moved to Amsterdam in 1976 and it is where she continues to live and work.
