About the artwork

“Much of my work deals with the trials and tribulations of traversing through life and for me the cowboy and the natural state that they generally exist in is a perfect representation of that.”

About the artist

Matt McCormick

Matt McCormick (born 1987) is a Los Angeles based painter drawing upon imagery of the American West in his paintings, rocking back and forth between nostalgic images of cacti and cowboys with the realities of poverty that he is faced with everyday in his Downtown Los Angeles life. These conflicting elements in McCormick’s work reflect the tenuous histories of California and the West as a whole. He holds a particular fascination with cowboys and all the various meanings they have embodied within the American lexicon, and they are often central to his pieces. His work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions around the world, including New York, Hong Kong, Miami, Los Angeles, London, Tokyo, Aspen, and San Francisco.
