About the artist

Roe Ethridge

Roe Ethridge (born 1969) is an artist who pulls equally from his commercial and artistic photography experience, blurring the distinction between fine art and applied practice. Ethridge explores how images can be reconstructed and reimagined to create new narratives and visuals, often adapting already published and contextualized images -- such as newspaper, catalogue, and stock images -- or even appropriating his own work in order to alter classical compositions with new realities and meaning. His work is an investigation into the role of the photographer and their ability to relay both personal and more collective experiences. Ethridge has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions and retrospectives, the first being in 2005 at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Museum of Modern Art, New York,
SFMoMA, San Francisco, S.M.A.K., Ghent, Tate Modern, London, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, among others. He lives and works in New York, New York.
