About the artist

Raphaela Simon

Raphaela Simon (born 1986) is a German artist known for her paintings that transform everyday objects into simplified forms set against monochromatic backgrounds. Working in slow, continuous stages, Simon’s process is one of overpainting. She generates forms in palimpsests. Her paintings evoke vernacular items, such as strawberries and watches, transfiguring them into simple, abstracted images. Simon names her works after ordinary objects, showing a desire on her part for viewers to imbue these abstract paintings with figurative meaning. In addition to her paintings, Simon creates sculptural figures made out of fabric, wool, and wire. These objects and figures, carefully staged in conjunction with the paintings, create their own narratives and dialogues with the painted works. Recent exhibitions include Sterne, Galerie Max Hetzler, Berlin (2019); Karo, TRAMPS, New York (2017); Staubsauger, Galerie Max Hetzler, Berlin (2017); and Tischlein deck dich, Hannah Hoffman Gallery, Los Angeles (2016). She lives and works in Berlin, Germany.
