About the artist

George Condo

George Condo, born 1957, is an American artist who lives and works in New York City. His oeuvre spans painting, drawing, sculpture, and printmaking. Condo began his career in the 1980s as a printer for Andy Warhol, and he has gone on to take part in a variety of high-profile collaborations from author William S. Burroughs to rapper Kanye West. Condo is one the the top selling living artists at auction, and his work Force Field broke the artist’s auction record in July 2020 at Christie’s Hong Kong, selling for over 6 million USD. In 2020, Sotheby’s reported that Condo’s was the most expensive work to be sold in an online-only sale in the history of the auction house, demonstrating the sustained and widespread demand for his work.

Condo’s compositions draw influence from historical and traditional works of art while paying tribute to contemporary pop culture through dramatically stylized and cartoonish characters, coining the term “artificial realism” to describe this hybridization. While he rose to prominence as a painter, Condo is an accomplished draftsman who views drawing as primary to his practice. Working in oil-stick to ink and pencil compositions, Condo skillfully navigates the complexities associated with drawing. The artist aims to negate the arti-historical narrative that favors oil painting over works on paper in an effort to “stand up for drawing.”

Condo has exhibited extensively throughout the United States of America, Europe, and Asia. His work resides in the permanent collections of the MoMA, the Whitney Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Broad Foundation, among other American and European public and institutional collections.
