About the artist

Jeff Koons

Contemporary American artist Jeff Koons (born 1955) is widely regarded for his paintings and sculptures that play with ideas of celebrity and commercial culture. After studying at the Maryland Institute College of Art and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Koons moved to New York City where he made a living as a stockbroker on Wall Street. Rising to prominence in the 1980s with his pseudo-Baroque “Banality” series, Koons’ oeuvre is a celebration of consumer goods and a questioning of what is “good'' taste- testing the boundaries between high art and mass consumerism. His paintings and sculptures borrow from art historical techniques and styles; while this is often seen as ironic by critics, Koons insists on its earnesty. Many view his work as critiques of the consumer, capitalist culture of the 1980s, although Koons posits that his artistic goals are to empower viewers towards achieving a state of personal transcendence through familiar images from popular culture and art history. Koons has become an iconic contemporary artist, recognizable by the smooth, highly reflective surfaces and bright, saturated colors that dominate his works. Koons has works held in the permanent collections including The Broad Los Angeles; Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York City; Tate Gallery, London; among many others. In 2014, the Whitney Museum of American Art held a major retrospective of Koons’ work dating back to 1978. He continues to live and work in New York City.
