About the artist

Jacqueline Humphries

Jacqueline Humphries is an American abstract painter. She was born in 1960 in New Orleans, Louisiana and studied in New York at the Parsons School of Design and in the Whitney Museum Independent Study program. Humphries’ process involves applying paint and enamel to canvas in thick coats and then scraping them off in varying depths, revealing the layers underneath. The removal of the surface coating is as crucial as the application, as the implements used for scraping contribute to the array of textures on the surface of the work.

Humphries’ work has been included in the Whitney Biennial and is in the permanent collections of the Whitney, the Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Tate Modern in London. She currently lives and works in New York, New York.
