About the artist

Serge Alain Nitegeka

Serge Alain Nitegeka, born in Rwanda in 1983, is a Johannesburg-based artist who works mainly in painting, sculpture, and large, site-specific installations. His work explores forced migration and the obstacles that migrants face. This interest stems from his family’s forced exodus from Rwanda in 1994 during the genocide when Nitegeke was just eleven years old. After moving to Goma across the Congolese border, and then to Nairobi, and finally to Johannesburg, Nitegeka made it to the University of the Witwatersrand where he studied art. He had his first solo exhibition in 2008 at SCAD Museum of Art and represented the South African pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2015.
