About the artist

Serge Attukwei Clottey

Serge Attukwei Clottey is a contemporary Ghanian artist who lives and works in Accra. Clottey’s practice focuses on the power of everyday objects and encompasses installation, performance, photography, and sculpture. Clottey refers to his work as “Afrogallonism”, a concept that confronts the question of material culture through the utilization of yellow gallon containers. His work merges personal and political narratives that are rooted in histories of trade, migration, and is strongly driven by the play of performance as a daily activity in Ghanian cultural history.

Clottey’s work has been gaining increasing momentum in both the primary and secondary markets. He had multiple artworks up for auction in Fall of 2021, double the number of his works that had previously been sold on the block. Additionally in 2021, Clottey partook in Desert X, a biennial site-specific outdoor art exhibit in the Coachella Valley; His pieces spoke to water scarcity and insecurity around the globe using his trademark yellow gallon containers formed into cubes.
