About the artist

Josh Smith

Josh Smith (born 1976) is an American artist celebrated for the diversity of his artistic practice, from the mediums he uses to the various styles he works in. Trained as a printmaker, but known for his work as a painter, Smith also makes sculptures, ceramics, and artist books. Smith rose to notoriety in the early 2000s for his gestural, semi-abstract paintings depicting the letters of his own name. He later moved into experimentation with monochromes and more figurative subject matter such as fish, leaves, skeletons, and insects. Smith’s paintings delve into questions of communication and how one can convey conceptual ideas through pictorial, iconographic representations. Smith’s work is held in numerous international public collections including The Broad, Los Angeles; Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh; Centre Pompidou, Paris; Moderna Museet, Stockholm; Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien (mumok), Vienna; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. Smith has lived and worked in New York since 1998.
