About the artist

Rashid Johnson

Rashid Johnson (born in 1977) is a Chicago-born African American artist whose work focuses on the intersection of race and class while fusing a variety of sculptural and painterly traditions. Johnson’s material draws from both lived experiences as well as the larger African American community and imaginative life. With roots in photography and conceptual art, he is equally as invested in exploring abstraction to explore elements of racial and cultural identity. Johnson’s work has come to encompass sculptural installations and wall-based works that incorporate materials such as shea butter, books, records, and incense.

Johnson was included in a landmark exhibition at the Studio Museum in Harlem in 2001 that showcased 28 young African American artists. The following year he had his first solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago. Since then, Johnson has had shows around the US and the globe, his works selling for upwards of seven figures on the secondary market.
