About the artist

Juan Muñoz

Juan Muñoz (1953-2001) was a Spanish sculptor known for his realistic and figurative sculptures installed in public spaces. These sculptures were created in a variety of mediums such as paper-maché, resin, bronze, painting, and audio recordings to blur the line between sculpture and installation, reality and art. Muñoz called himself a “storyteller,” as he broke the traditional rules of sculpture in the 1990s to create narrative pieces: monochromatic, smaller-than-life-size figures engaged in interactions. These installations or set-ups immersed the viewer in the scene and invited them to participate or interact with the sculptures. His influential career and art production was cut short when he died at the age of 48 in 2001 in Ibiza, Spain.
