About the artist

Susumu Kamijo

Susumu Kamijo, born in 1975 in Nagano, Japan, is a contemporary artist based in Brooklyn, New York, best-known for his colorful, stylized depictions of his pet dogs. Since 2014, Kamijo has worked on a series of drawings and paintings depicting his dogs in deconstructed compositions comprised of block shapes and colors. The continual clamour for his playful poodle paintings attests to their success in the secondary market, as sales have climbed exponentially within the past two years; A work on paper by Kamijo titled Chasing reached a record sale of $94,500 USD at Phillips in June 2021. Kamijo has had solo exhibitions at Jack Hanley Gallery (NY), Stems, Brussels (BE), GNYP, Berlin (DE), Harper’s Books, New York (NY), Marvin Gardens, Queens (NY), Sotheby’s S2 (NY), and Masahiro Maki Gallery, Tokyo (JP), among others. He received a BFA in Painting and Drawing at the University of Oregon in 2000 and a MFA in Painting and Drawing from the University of Washington in 2002.
