About the artist

Edward Burtynsky

Edward Burtynsky (born 1955) is a Canadian photographer who captures the human interference and destruction wrecked on the natural landscapes around the globe. Photographing mines, industrial refineries, shipbreaking yards from one end of the world to the other, Burtynsky’s haunting and beautiful aerial photographs resemble abstract paintings at times. Having been exposed to the sites and impacts of the General Motors plant in his hometown, his early experiences with industry helped to form and develop his photographic process and work. In addition to his own photography practice, Burtynsky opened Toronto Image Works in 1985, a darkroom rental facility, custom photo laboratory, digital imaging and new media computer-training center for all levels of the local artistic community. Burtynsky received the TED Prize and the Outreach award at Les Rencontres d’Arles in 2004. In 2006, he was awarded the title Officer of the Order of Canada. He has held solo exhibitions at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. and the National Gallery of Canada, among other institutions. He lives and works in Toronto.
