About the artist

Titus Kaphar

Titus Kaphar, born in 1976, works in a wide range of mediums to confront Western art by dismantling the classic visual styles and representations that are so ingrained into the canon. Kaphar utilizes deconstructive techniques such as cutting, stitching, binding, and erasing to reconstruct new narratives. His paintings, sculptures, and installations examine the history of representation and unearth the relevance the “past” has in contemporary society.

Kaphar has enjoyed solo exhibitions at the Studio Museum in Harlem, MoMA PS1, and the National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C. In addition to his own artistic practice, he is the founder of NXTHVN, a residency program in New Haven, CT focused on mentoring artists and curators of color.
