About the artist

Kassou Seydou

Kassou Seydou (born in 1971) is a Senagalese artist who currently lives and works in Keur Massar, Senegal. After graduating from the Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts in Dakar in 2001, Seydou partook in a two year residency in Joal-Fadiouth, the birthplace of Léopold Sedar Senghor. Seydou’s paintings, rendered in warm pastel hues, are completed using a series of patterns and symbols sourced from various cultures and visual languages. Underneath the swirls and deciphering of the symbols are figurative characters, oftentimes represented at work: farmers, merchants, or metalworkers depicted in their daily environment in an abstracted manner. The presence of human representations within an otherwise symbolic painting reveals Seydou’s desire to prompt critical thought within his viewers regarding human relations within society and the contemporary global community.
