About the artist

Michele Abeles

Michele Abeles, born 1977, is an American visual artist who works primarily in photography. Best known for her disorienting photomontages, her work is often referred to as “post-Internet” art for its flattened-yet-layered composition responds to our daily consumption of images through a screen; a flattened space with multiple windows and tabs competing for space and attention. Borrowing from the language of digital tools like Photoshop, Abeles creates staged and schizophrenic still lifes using models and found objects as subject matter. Abeles casts her models via Craigslist and reduces them to mere body parts employing them more as a prop than a human subject. The confusing perspectives emulate digital editing tools, while floating body parts speaks to our oversaturation and desensitization to imagery.

Abeles lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. She received a BA in psychology from Washington University, St. Louis in 1999 and a MFA in photography from Yale University in 2007. She is represented by Studio 47 in New York and was included in the third edition of “Greater New York” at MoMA PS1 which showcases 68 emerging artists living and working in the metropolitan area of New York.
