About the artist

William Wegman

William Wegman (born 1943) is an American artist and photographer best known for his photographs featuring his Weimaraner dogs. Although originally trained in painting at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Wegman turned to photography in the 1970s when he began photographing his Weimaraner dog, Man Ray (named after the famed Surrealist artist). He positioned Man Ray with and amongst humorous props and costumes. This practice continued with the succession of Fay Ray, Wegman turning to a Polaroid camera during this era. Fay Ray’s litter would be heavily featured in Wegman’s photography and films well into the 1990s. In addition to his photography and film practice, he produced artist books in which his dogs star as the lead characters, such as in his version of the fairy tale Cinderella. His works are held in the permanent collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Modern Art, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., amongst others.
