About the artist

Alex Katz

Alex Katz, born in 1927, is an American artist whose work spans over six decades and is characterized by monochrome backdrops, a flat style, and fluid lines. Katz developed his own approach to contemporary representational painting during the height of Abstract Expressionism. Art historian Robert Storr described Katz’ style as “a new and distinctive type of realism in American art which combines aspects of both abstraction and representation.” Best known for his portraiture, Katz paints friends and family, often with a cropped composition that is influenced by films, television, and billboard advertising. His most important muse is his wife Ada, whom he has painted over 200 times and is the subject of his record-breaking painting Blue Umbrella I, which sold for over 3 million euros at Phillips London in 2019.

Katz began his career by painting his portraits on canvas, and over time, shifted to painting directly on shaped aluminum sheets. Katz refers to his painting technique as “wet on wet” and uses it in order to achieve a lustrous finish. In addition to portraiture, Katz is also known for his landscape and flower paintings rendered in his signature style. While his work has been mischaracterized as cold or emotionally vacant, Katz purposely ignores character and mood to focus on the “immediate present” and pure sensation of outward appearance.

Over the course of his lifelong career, Katz has been featured in greater than 250 solo exhibitions and nearly 500 group exhibitions internationally, and he shows no signs of slowing down. During the unprecedented events of 2020, Katz remained busy and produced more than 50 paintings, mostly of flowers and landscapes while waiting out the pandemic in Pennsylvania. Katz lives and works in New York.
