About the artist

Amani Lewis

Amani Lewis (born 1994) is a mixed-media artist whose work aims to share overlooked stories of Baltimore’s Black community through saturated color palettes and complex compositions overlaid with loose, illustrative linework. They work with a variety of materials, including cloth, paper, paint, pastel, and glitter in exploration of both digital and traditional techniques.  Through their portraiture work, they foster personal relationships with their subjects, focusing on their family and friends. Lewis is interested in depicting the physical as it relates to the vitality and spirit of their subjects. Their work empowers individuals and their personal narratives while also speaking to the power of community. Amani Lewis holds a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art in General Fine Arts and Illustration. They have completed a residency at the Fountainhead and have exhibited widely, including at the August Wilson African American Cultural Center in Pittsburgh and at MICA, along with group exhibitions Black Voices / Black Microcosm. CF Hill, (Stockholm, Sweden, 2020)., BLACK VOICES: Friend of Mine. Ross-Sutton Gallery, (New York, NY, 2021), and Shattered Glass. Jeffrey Deitch, (Los Angeles, CA, 2021). In Fall of 2021, Lewis will open a solo exhibition at Salon94 in New York, New York.
