About the artist

Will Cotton

Inspired by traditional techniques of the Hudson River Valley School and of figure painting, Will Cotton, born in 1965, creates surreal foodscapes involving women lounging about sweet desserts. Along with his more traditional inspirations, Cotton’s work is influenced by the children’s game Candy Land and the pin-up posters of George Petty. Cotton’s oeuvre, filled with cupcakes and sugary confections, is an exploration into gluttony, beauty, and desire. These environments are constructed out of actual sweets concocted by Cotton himself, an accomplished pastry chef. Along with the actual desserts in his studio, he paints figures from life as well, wedding the two and playing with scale and pictorial space.

Cotton’s work is included in the collections of the Seattle Art Museum, Columbus Museum of Art, and the National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C. He is currently based in New York City.
