About the artist

Jasper Johns

Jasper Johns, born 1930, is one of the most significant and influential American painters of the twentieth century. From the start of his career, Johns challenged Abstract Expressionism, the dominant style in the 1950s, and helped pave the way for future art movements such as Pop, Minimal, and Conceptual Art. Johns is best known for his flag paintings, in which he reamigines an iconic piece of Americana, the American flag. Other motifs adopted by Johns include targets, maps, and numbers. While viewers often try to look for deeper meanings in Johns’ work, he refuses to comment on the meaning of his work other than the fact that the imagery is “derived from things the mind already knows.” He is also recognized for his extensive print-making and sculpture work. Johns has received great recognition and many awards throughout his prolific career, and in 2011, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. His work can be found at many prominent museums and collections around the world. Johns lives and works in Sharon, Connecticut.
