About the artist

Mickalene Thomas

Mickalene Thomas, born in 1971, is a contemporary African American artist known for her paintings that incorporate mixed media such as rhinestones, acrylic, and enamel. Thomas’ photographs and paintings often focus on Black female subjects, exploring themes of beauty, sexuality, and desire. While Thomas employs 1970s style patterns and bold uses of color, she also nods to the greats of the art historical canon with juxtapositions that reference artists such as Picasso and Manet.

Thomas has had solo exhibitions around the globe and has shot as a photographer for publications such as W, Out, and T: The New York Times Style Magazine. Her work has also commanded great attention on the secondary market, as works have gone for upwards of seven figures.
