About the artist

Louise Lawler

Louise Lawler, born 1947, is a conceptual American artist, photographer, and key member of the Pictures Generation, a group of American artists who emerged in the 1970s.  Lawler’s signature style was developed in the early 1980s when she began taking photographs of other artists’ works in a variety of settings like museums, storage spaces, auction houses, and collectors’ homes.  In a single shot, Lawler examines the way the art is lived with, exhibited, handled, stored, and/or ignored.  Her fascination is not with the artwork itself, but its juxtaposition to its environment and seeks to find the point of impact where taste, social status, and influence converge as a force in art.  Lawler also revisits and restages past works into different formats.  This once again illustrates her interest in understanding how art reaches viewers beyond the  traditional white walls of galleries and museums.

Upon receiving her BFA from Cornell University, Lawler moved to New York where she was initially represented by Castelli Gallery.  Lawler lives and works in Brooklyn and has had many solo exhibitions at prominent museums and galleries such as the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Art Institute of Chicago.  Her work was also featured in the 1991, 2000, and 2008 Whitney Biennials.
