About the artist

Josh Smith

Josh Smith, born in 1976, is an American artist celebrated for the diversity of his artistic practice, from the mediums he uses to the various styles in which he works. Trained as a printmaker but known for his work as a painter, Smith also makes sculptures, ceramics, and artist books. Smith rose to notoriety in the early 2000s for his gestural, semi-abstract paintings depicting the letters of his own name. He later moved into experimentation with monochromes and more figurative subject matter such as fish, leaves, skeletons, and insects. Smith’s fluorescent paintings of palm tree silhouettes have garnered him exceptional acclaim from the market, many of them sending secondary sales into six figures, with his record sale coming in under $300,000 USD. Smith’s paintings delve into questions of communication and how one can convey conceptual ideas through pictorial, iconographic representations. Smith has stated that “Art should be sharp, timely and timeless. It should provoke something within the viewer. If they do not like it, then that’s OK. At the very least it should make people think.”

Smith’s work is held in numerous international public collections including the Broad, Los Angeles, Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, Centre Pompidou, Paris, Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, MoMA, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. The artist has lived and worked in New York since 1998.
