About the artist

Torbjørn Rødland

Torbjørn Rødland (born 1970) is a Norwegian-born, Los Angeles based photographer. Rendering everyday subjects in a slightly uncanny and unfamiliar light, Rødland creates portraits, still lives, and nature scenes that emphasize the interactions both between the subjects in the photographs and between the photograph and the viewers. He pushes the medium of photography towards painting in his use of formal elements and heavy hand in symbolism, forging connections between twentieth century art photography, twenty-first century photography, and imagery commonly found in advertising and social media. Rødland’s work is positioned between the media critique of the 1980s Pictures Generation and the captured moments of reality from photographers like Nan Goldin and Larry Clark. His work lies in multiple spaces and constructs numerous complex meanings and narratives. He has exhibited in Los Angeles, London, New York, Paris, Milan, and beyond. His work belongs to the collections of New York’s Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Stedelijk Museum, and the Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art in Oslo, among other major institutions.
