About the artist

Amoako Boafo

Amoako Boafo, a Ghanaian artist born in 1984, is known for his radiant and vivid portraits of Black subjects. Born in Accra, Ghana, he graduated from Ghanatta College of Art and Design in 2008 before moving to Vienna, Austria in 2014.

It was in Austria where he began painting portraits of the Black figures he was meeting in the city. Not soon after that he began painting with what he is now known for: his fingers. Rendering his subjects’ faces with the swirls and textural contrasts of his hands create a striking juxtaposition to the vibrant and two-dimensional clothing and backdrops of the portraits. His rendering of his subjects, often utilizing bold colors and patterns, invites a reflection on the diversity and complexity of those he is portraying. Boafo’s paintings serve to challenge existing beliefs around Black identity by celebrating the individuality in each of his subjects.

Amoako Boafo’s work is held in the collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Marieluise Hessel Collection, Hessel Museum of Art, Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College, The Albertina Museum Vienna, and the Rubell Museum.
