About the artist

Danielle Orchard

American painter Danielle Orchard, born in 1985, works with popular forms, such as the female nude figure, frequently found in the art historical canon, through her paintings and drawings. Nodding to giants of 20th century modernism, such as Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse, Orchard depicts women lounging about together and in the midst of completing everyday tasks. Whether they’re laying poolside or applying makeup at a vanity, the women are often undressed with cigarettes and drinks surrounding them. Working in an Analytic Cubist style, her women are angular and sharp in style, yet bathed in a light and vibrant pastel color palette reminiscent of Matisse. Through these depictions Orchard explores women’s relationships to one another and more largely, to depictions of women throughout art history.

Having exhibited in galleries in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Copenhagen, Brooklyn-based Orchard also helps run Underdonk, an artist-led space in New York. She is represented by Jack Hanley Gallery.
