About the artist

Lucien Smith

Lucien Smith, born 1989, is an American painter best known for his process-based abstract works. Smith received his BFA from Cooper Union in 2011, and it was while he was still in school that he began receiving attention from the art world. His graduate collection resold at auction for $389,000 two years after his graduation, sending art critics into a frenzy.

Growing unhappy with the gallery system, Smith decided to quit his galleries and represent himself in 2015. Since then, his practice has continued to develop, and he consistently exhibits his work in notable galleries and museums. In 2020, he received his first solo museum exhibition at Parrish Museum. The body of works in this exhibition, titled Southampton Suite, are derived from his Rain Paintings series in which he uses the technique of showering paint onto unprimed canvases with an industrial fire extinguisher. Additionally, Smith started his own non-profit in 2015, Serving the People, which provides young artists with support, programming, and a commission-free sales platform. In 2021, Smith partnered with Adidas to produce 200 sneakers for which the proceeds went to benefit Serving the People and aiding young artists. Smith’s early accomplishments include giving his own TED Talk, fronting a Supreme campaign, and making Forbes’ 30 under 30 in 2013 and 2014. Smith lives and works in Montauk.
