About the artist

Rosemarie Trockel

Rosemarie Trockel, born 1952, is a German Conceptual artist whose work investigates traditional notions of femininity, cultural codes, politics, and artistic production. Her body of work includes knitted works, mechanized installations, video, ceramics, sculpture, and drawings in a variety of mediums. Regarded as a female pioneer in a male-dominated industry, Trockel is best known for her practice of taking traditionally feminine activities, such as knitting, out of context in terms of production with mechanical and laborious forms. Trockel’s approach is to use whatever media best conveys the idea and message of the work, regardless of pre-existing connotations. Her work has been exhibited and collected worldwide, and the New Museum held one of her largest North American exhibitions in 2012 titled Rosemarie Trockel: A Cosmos in 2012. It later traveled to the Serpentine Gallery in London and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia. Trockel is a professor at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, and lives and works in Cologne.
