About the artist

Gavin Kenyon

Gavin Kenyon, born 1980, is an American, New York based sculptor best known for his bulbous sculptural forms ranging in scale and material.  Kenyon’s sculptures alter our perception of space by creating new focal points and perspectives while recalling traditional forms such as arches or columns.  Kenyon has a lot of control over the shapes of his sculptures, but elements of surprise remain regarding the contours and twists that will ultimately inhabit the sculpture.  An extremely physical process, Kenyon pressurizes wet cement in fabric, vinyl, or faux fur moulds, and later sews pieces together and paints in the final stage.  The end result leaves the sculptures with a biomorphic quality, both physically heavy and viscerally primitive.

Kenyon was born and raised in Upstate New York, attending Syracuse University for his BFA and later went on to receive his MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York.  He had his first solo museum exhibition in 2014 at MoMA PS1 and has been exhibited at galleries internationally.
