About the artist

Alex Katz

Alex Katz, born 1927, is an American artist whose work spans over six decades. Born and raised in New York and having attended the Cooper Union Art School in Manhattan, Katz is a true New York native. Characterized by his monochrome backdrops, flat style, and fluid lines, Katz developed his own approach to contemporary representational painting during the height of Abstract Expressionism. Best known for his portraiture, Katz paints friends and family, often with a cropped composition that is influenced by films, television, and billboard advertising. He began his career with painting his portraits on canvas and over time shifted to painting directly on shaped aluminum sheets. Katz refers to his painting technique as “wet on wet” in order to achieve a lustrous finish. In addition to portraiture, he is also known for his landscape and flower paintings that are rendered in his signature style. While his work has been mischaracterized as cold or emotionally vacant, Katz purposely ignores character and mood to focus on the “immediate present” and pure sensation of outward appearance.
