About the artist

Ai WeiWei

Ai Weiwei, born in Beijing in 1957, is an outspoken Chinese artist and activist best known for imbuing his artist production with his political beliefs. His oeuvre includes sculptural installations, photographs, videos, and architectural projects. Vocal in his criticisms of the Chinese government’s stances on democracy and human rights, Weiwei was arrested in 2011 and detained for 81 days, eventually released onto house arrest and prohibited from engaging in public speech. He has continued to be candid and forthright in his critiques of his home country, often utilizing historical Chinese art forms to make statements on contemporary Chinese politics and society. For example, Coca Cola Vase (1994) is a traditional Hans Dynasty urn painted over with the iconic and recognizable Coca Cola logo, sparking a dialogue between the past and the present. The work connects tradition with contemporary social concerns and issues, raising questions over mass consumption and the loss of history and tradition. In another series, Study of Perspective, Weiwei creates a photography series of him holding up his middle finger to significant institutions and monuments, such as the White House and Tiananmen Square. In most instances of these photos, the places he is photographing represent ones that have interfered with democratic values. It is another example of his art encapsulating his political convictions.

Ai Weiwei is one of China’s most influential contemporary artists, and is renowned globally for his work. His work has appeared and is in the permanent collections of institutions around the world.
