About the artist

Alex Katz

Alex Katz, born 1927, is an American artist whose work spans over six decades. Born and raised in New York, and having attended the Cooper Union Art School in Manhattan, Katz is a true New York native. He had his first gallery exhibition in New York in 1954, and while it took a while for critics to understand and appreciate his work, he is one of the most in demand artists of today.

Characterized by his monochrome backdrops, flat style, and fluid lines, Katz developed his own approach to contemporary representational painting during the height of Abstract Expressionism. Art historian Robert Storr described Katz’ style as, “a new and distinctive type of realism in American art which combines aspects of both abstraction and representation.” Best known for his portraiture, Katz paints friends and family, often with a cropped composition, that is influenced by films, television, and billboard advertising. His most important muse is his wife Ada, who he has painted over 200 times. He began his career with painting his portraits on canvas, and overtime shifted to painting directly on shaped aluminum sheets. Katz refers to his painting technique as “wet on wet” in order to achieve a lustrous finish. In addition to portraiture, he is also known for his landscape and flower paintings that are painted in his signature style. While his work has been confused as being cold or emotionally vacant, Katz purposely ignores character and mood to focus on the “immediate present” and pure sensation of outward appearance.

His active career has accumulated in over 250 solo exhibitions and nearly 500 group exhibitions internationally since the start of his career, and shows no signs of slowing down. During the 2020 pandemic, Katz remained busy and produced more than 50 paintings, mostly of flowers and landscapes, while he was staying in Pennsylvania. Katz lives and works in New York.
