About the artist

Katharina Grosse

Katharina Grosse (born 1961) is a contemporary German artist for whom there is no distinction between painting, sculpture, and installation. Utilizing a spray gun with acrylics in electric colors Grosse creates large scale in situ paintings and smaller wall works, distancing her body and hand as instrument in the artistic act of painting by using a machine. Her work creates an immersive experience for the viewer, rather than them being passive bystanders. She eventually began combining the streaks found in her earlier work with mist and cloud-like forms. As her experimentation with her materials expanded, so did her in situ paintings. For example, in 2004, Grosse spray painted the entire interior of the Contemporary Art Museum in Houston. After some time, she began incorporating debris and soil into her work as well, introducing it alongside the pigments used.
