About the artist

KAWS (born 1974) is an American contemporary artist and designer who is known for his paintings, sculptures, toys, and clothing collaborations that exist at the intersection of art and commerce. Born Brian Donnelly, the artist began his career as a graffiti artist in New York City in the early 1990s, tagging buildings with “KAWS.” The notorious name was born out of Donnely’s love of how the letters looked next to one another. KAWS went on to work as an animator for Disney, eventually creating limited edition toys in the late 1990s after being approached by Bounty Hunter, a Japanese toy and streetwear brand.

KAWS has gone on to design toys and clothing for well-known brands such as Original Fake, A Bathing Ape, Undercover, Kung Faux, Nike, Vans, and Comme des Garçons. In addition to his toy and clothing collaborations, KAWS has reworked familiar cartoon characters from The Simpsons, Mickey Mouse, and even the Michelin Man. His figures, whether they be in the form of paintings, prints, t-shirts, or large-scale sculptures, are easily recognizable for the signature X’s that are drawn over the eyes and skulls. The influences of Pop Art and contemporary culture are evident in every piece KAWS produces as he continues to blur the lines between fine and commercial art. His boundary-pushing practice has earned him shows at the Brooklyn Museum, the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, and the Yuz Museum in Shanghai. His work can be found in the collections at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, and the Rosenblum Collection in Paris.
