About the artist

Thomas Bayrle

German artist Thomas Bayrle, born in 1937, is a pioneer of German Pop Art who draws heavily from his own personal experiences and memories of living in Cold War Germany. His satirical and political works of art are best known for the “super-forms” he employs, large images composed of smaller ones. They are oftentimes commentaries on the rapid globalization of our world, utilizing images that reference mass production and popular capitalist goods. This obsession with repetition and pattern can be traced to his work as an apprentice within a textile factory, his utilization of it morphing into a means to comment on mass consumerism and society.

One of the most important artists to emerge from Germany during his generation, Bayrle has exhibited his work in solo and group exhibitions around Europe and the United States, and his work is held in the major collections of museums and institutions around the globe.
