Francis Bacon

British (1909-1992)

Francis Bacon (1909-1992) was an influential British painter. Born in Dublin, Ireland to English parents, his family briefly lived in London during the First World War. Francis Bacon left Ireland in the late 1920’s due to strained relationships with his family over his homosexuality. He traveled to London, Berlin, and Paris where he experienced the full range of city life from opulence to squalor. Bacon was greatly influenced by an exhibition of drawings by Picasso in 1927. While living in Montparnasse, he was also inspired by the work of Picabia, de Chirico and Soutine. In 1944, Baacon painted Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion.... Show more
